This has worked for me on a few different spreadsheets with files in different drives. How to check for non-phantom linksI just go to an empty cell, control-click and select HYPERLINK. In the formula bar, place the cursor at the end of the formula and type a + sign, but do NOT press Enter (figure 4).To remove Phantom Links from a workbook, first check to make sure that there are not any non-phantom links in the file. Click in the cell holding the link formula (B6). The formula's value, thus far, displays. Usually if I have 2 workbooks open I can create a formula in 1 which links to a cell in another workbook just by having them both open and clicking on the relevant cell.If you have ever opened an Excel file and been prompted to update links to another file, yet you are certain that there are no links to any other files, your file may contain phantom links.Excel returns to the destination sheet (Totals) and highlights the cell below the link formula we just created in B6 (figure 3).If you find a real link, change the file reference or delete the link You can use the * wildcard character in your search Search all tabs simultaneously by pressing Shift + Ctrl + Page Down and then running the search Run a search (Ctrl + F) for the file that appears in the Edit Links menu
